This portrait is of a gentleman that goes by the name of of Benjamin Kyle. He’s a man who doesn’t know anything about himself. Literally. He was unconscious when he was discovered behind a fast food restaurant in Georgia and had no belongings, severe sunburns, was nearly blind and had no idea who he was.
Benjamin Kyle, which isn’t even his real name, suffers from dissociative amnesia which means he forgot his entire former life. He doesn’t really exist, even though he’s alive in real life. It’s a really inspirational story, with all of the people who have gone out of their way to help out Benjamin. The video of the preview shown at the Tribeca Film Festival, greatly summarizes this story.
finding benjaman film:
There’s a documentary about Benjamin Kyle and how he spent the past 8 years without being allowed to have another social security number (which limits his banking and credit options). Called Finding Benjamin, the hope was to spread the word of Benjamin Kyle so that someone would recognize him and tell him who he was. Artist Miguel Endara saw the documentary and wanted to help Benjamin by creating this amazing dot portrait of him. It took over 138 hours to make and about 2.1 million dots total. Let’s hope Benjamin can find out who he is soon.
